Lime Sources
Best place to find Key limes is South Florida. Get in your car and head South. It will take about a week to get to Florida. Make friends with locals who have avocados and Key limes in their backyards. If you don't make friends easily, or don't want them, you can buy them. Can't or just don't want to go to Florida? Look for Key limes in Hispanic grocery stores. In the Boston area, Key limes are sometimes available January at Shaw's Market on Mount Auburn Street in Cambridge and at any Bread and Circus. Order key limes by mail. As a last resort use substitutions. But, you really would have much more fun, especially, in the winter, going to Miami and picking out your own Key limes at southern Florida's finest fruit stand.
Robert is Here for Key Limes
From Miami, drive down to Homestead to Robert Is Here, which is located at the Gate of the Everglades National Park for fresh Key limes, Key lime pies and Key lime milk shakes. Fresh Key limes are available year round, especially in September and October. Don't miss Robert's delicious Key Lime Milk Shake while you're there. Robert will ship 10 lbs Key limes for $35. This is a super price! Lee recommends juicing the entire batch, then storing in half-cup quantities in the freezer. Orders go out year round Mondays and Tuesdays so your limes don't sit over the weekend in some hot truck or warehouse. For more information surf to Robert's stand or e-mail Robert with your name, address, phone number, and credit card number. Robert's site and e-mail are secure. If you just can not find any Key limes and don't want to bother with mail orders, here's some tips on substituting.

Key Lime Information, Links & Goodies
Newspapers are great sources of information about Key Limes!
In Sour Splendor, Real Key Lime Still Rules, an excellent article by R.W. Apple Jr. published in New York Times Food Section, Wednesday 12/10/97 explains Key lime history, current status with chefs and the foods industry. I may be found in public libraries. The Sun Sentinel South Florida published the same information accessible on-line for free under the title Enduring appeal of the Key lime. Unfortunately this link is now also dead. I will try to trace the article to post for you. Best bargain on the web! You can access WITHOUT CHARGE current day's New York Times articles with NY Times on-line. Cooking articles stay on longer but not forever. Most articles can be downloaded. New York Times does charge a fee to access archives and to post any of their articles. New York Times has a great cooking forum too.
Check out Joyce Rosencrans' article from Detroit News Food Section 9/10/96 for tips and information about limes in general plus the scoop on Key limes.

Your Tips John recommends looking for Key limes in "Latino groceries in San Francisco's Mission District. Ask for limones...whereas regular sweet lime are called limas". John also suggests growing your own! "Some local nurseries will sell you a small tree which will bear fruit shortly enough, if you have a sheltered enough, warm corner of your backyard to put it in. My sister in Palo Alto successfully grew them herself for several years, but a severe (for this part of the country) cold snap finally killed it....they won't take much frost." Any reader who has or knows where to find recipes for these Key lime delicacies, please contact Lee. |
Your Requests Gloria from Florida is looking for a recipe for White Chocolate Key Lime Cookies like she had in Savannah Georgia. Any ideas? Key lime lovers want recipes for Key Lime Pound Cake and Pickled Key Limes. After checking with NYTimes Cooking Forum moderator, Amy Cotler, Lee suggests taking your favorite Lemon Pound Cake recipe and replacing lemon juice with Key lime juice and adding some lime zest. Pickled Key Limes could perhaps be made using a recipe for Morrocan Preserved Lemons. See Paula Wolfert's Couscous and Other Good Foods from Morocco. |
